How a To Determine the Quality of a Web Design Companies through its Portfolio
Friday, September 4th, 2009First of all, a web design company should always have a portfolio website. Any companies that does not is probably new in the field but even then they should have their own website along with some special websites they built entirely for their portfolio. Avoid firms that don’t have portfolios because you have no way of knowing their ability otherwise.
Their portfolio examples should comply with currently accepted web design standards. What are the currently accepted standards? They can be found on the website for the World Wide Web Consortium or W3C for short (http://www.w3.org/). The information on the W3C site might seem overwhelming but there is a simple way to quickly check a website and that is by using their validation service found at http://validator.w3.org/. This tool is easy to use and only requires input of the site URL listed in the portfolio.
Do you like the overall style of their web design portfolio? That style will be the same style they apply to your website. If you do not like the way they combine colours, display text, and lay out their pages then you should shop for a web designer with a style that will fit you.
When evaluating how fast one of these websites loads, it is important to discern if it is designed in Flash or designed in HTML. A Flash website will load everything first and then display while a HTML site will render as it reads instructions sequentially. Consequently, HTML websites should always load faster. You can usually tell a Flash website by the progress indicator that displays while it is loading. HTML pages should load quickly if you have a normal internet connection. However if you see the text display quickly and then the images paint slowly then it is an indication that the web designer does not know how to optimize website objects such as photographs.
